Community Development Department

The Community Development Department at Tumwater City Services provides services to help residents plan, build, and maintain their communities. These services include plan review, inspections, code enforcement, and long-range comprehensive planning. This department works with the City Council, Planning Commission, Hearing Examiner, and Tree Board to ensure that new development adheres to the city’s environmental, safety, and building standards.

The Tumwater Community Development Department is a comprehensive planning department that provides excellent service to the Tumwater community. The department prepares reports for policy bodies, analyzes land use data, and prepares statistical reports, as well as performs other duties as assigned. This position requires a high level of attention to detail and accuracy, and must be able to effectively handle competing requests.

Water Resources Division

The Water Resources Division of the Tumwater City Services Department is responsible for the management of the City’s water supply and wastewater services. The Division provides comprehensive planning, program development, enforcement, and resource stewardship activities. It also provides public health services and maintains water quality standards.

Tumwater’s water supply is derived from groundwater sources. These are deep below the Earth’s surface, in the spaces between layers of sand and gravel. A system of wells draws water from these aquifers and then custom treats it to provide clean, high-quality drinking water. The utility operates 11 wells in three well fields. These wells pump water from aquifers beneath the Thurston River. The system also maintains two interconnections with Olympia and a back-up source at Tumwater Valley Municipal Golf Course.

Planning
